In the United States, nearly 2.5 million people worked on a temporary and contract basis for staffing organizations each week in 2023, according to the American Staffing Association. Over the course of the year, these companies hired approximately 12.7 million employees.
These employees primarily represent the industrial, administrative/office, professional/managerial, engineering and IT, and healthcare industries in temporary and contract jobs.
Why do they turn to a staffing organization for work?
Many reasons!
More and more employees (especially Millennials) appreciate the flexibility of a job that can be performed anywhere and that does not require a long-term commitment.
Some are seeking new jobs and using a temp position to make some money or test the waters in a new industry.
Other temp and contract workers who like seasonal employment might take the summers off to spend with their kids and then find a pre-holiday position to increase income when school returns, for example.
Likewise, employers appreciate the affordability and efficiency of temp and contract work, as well as the option to hire workers for the longer term if it’s a great fit on both sides, creating a win-win.
